A sanitary pressure relief valve prevents overpressure through direct force balance. Inlet pressure pushes against a sensing diaphragm, while an adjustable spring provides opposing force. For precision, select a valve where the spring constant to effective diaphragm area ratio (K/A) matches the system's normal operating pressure—not the maximum. Field installation requires the outlet port to face vertically downward for self-draining. Set the cracking pressure at 110–115% of the normal working pressure to avoid frequent chattering.

The Force Balance Equation in Hygienic Service

Why Diaphragm Area Determines Set Point Accuracy

The mechanism operates on a simple force balance: spring preload (downward) versus inlet static pressure multiplied by the diaphragm's effective area (upward). A larger diaphragm produces a greater net force differential from small pressure changes. The effective area shift should remain within ±5% across the operating temperature range.

Spring Selection and the Dead-Band Effect

Spring stiffness directly influences reseating pressure and dead-band.

  • High stiffness springs create wide dead-bands exceeding 20%, causing system pressure oscillation.

  • Low stiffness springs maintain tight dead-bands below 10% but require precise diaphragm tolerances.

Resolving Field Failures

Case 1 – Valve Chatters Under Normal Load

Chattering occurs when the valve opens and closes rapidly. The root cause is often undersized inlet piping or an oversized valve. Install a reducer upstream or select a model with an integrated dashpot mechanism to stabilize diaphragm motion.

Case 2 – Seat Leakage After CIP/SIP Cycles

Thermal expansion during Clean-in-Place cycles can relax seat stress. Specify PTFE-encapsulated gaskets for the seat. Replace any seal showing compression set exceeding 0.2mm.

Field Set Pressure Adjustment Steps

  1. Isolate and depressurize the valve. Drain all process fluid.

  2. Apply test pressure using nitrogen or water at 0.1 Bar per second.

  3. Record the cracking point when audible flow begins.

  4. Adjust the spring screw (each quarter-turn changes set pressure by 0.2 Bar).

  5. Repeat verification across three strokes. Reseating pressure should stabilize at 85–90% of cracking pressure.

Material Compatibility Matrix

Media Characteristics Recommended Body Recommended Diaphragm Prohibited Combinations
Strong acids, oxidizers SS316L (electropolished) PTFE / PFA Aluminum housings
Caustics, salt solutions SS304 (chromium-plated) EPDM Brass springs
Oils, hydrocarbons Hastelloy C-276 FKM (fluoroelastomer) Natural rubber
Purified water, steam SS316L (mirror-finish) Reinforced PTFE Unsupported PTFE

System Compatibility: Relief vs. Reducing

A sanitary pressure relief valve serves as a fail-safe device, protecting upstream pumps and heat exchangers. A sanitary pressure reducing valve operates continuously, maintaining constant downstream pressure. Never substitute one for the other. For high-pressure differential applications, consider a pilot-operated sanitary prv.

Preventative Maintenance Schedule

Quarterly inspections extend service life.

  • Diaphragm fatigue: Replace if center thickness wear exceeds 0.1mm.

  • Spring free-length: Discard if permanent compression exceeds 2%.

  • Seat lapping: For scratches deeper than 0.05mm, lap using 600-grit paper.

  • Functional test: Hold at 95% of set pressure for 15 minutes. Decay must not exceed 0.5 Bar.

Proper selection, installation, and maintenance ensure personnel safety and product integrity in hygienic processes.

Sanitary Stainless Steel Rebreather

Sanitary Air Rebreather keep the pressure in the tank the same as the atmospheric pressure to protect the tank. The principle is same as micro-filter's.It can prevent the outside particulates coming into the storage tank due to the liquid level descends. It ensure the air purity in the tank.
