A sanitary pressure relief valve protects hygienic processing systems from over-pressurization through a spring-loaded mechanism in 316L stainless steel with mirror-polished internals. The valve opens when pressure exceeds the setpoint, vents excess fluid, and reseats when pressure returns to normal. 316L provides corrosion resistance for CIP/SIP. How does a sanitary prv work

  1. An adjustable spring holds the valve plug against the seat.

  2. When line pressure exceeds the setpoint (0.35 to 5 bar), the plug lifts.

  3. Excess pressure vents through a side outlet.

  4. The valve reseats when pressure drops below the setpoint.

  • ⚡ 304 instead of 316L: 304 pits within 6-12 months in chlorides. → Specify 316L; service life 5+ years.

  • ❌ Rough finishes: Above 12 Ra increases bacterial adhesion. → Specify Ra ≤ 0.4 μm electropolished.

  • 📌 Non-self-draining bodies: Product retention creates bacterial zones. → Specify self-draining geometry.

  • 💥 Incorrect set pressure: Overpressure or premature relief. → Verify setpoint against system requirements.

Working Principle – Spring-Loaded Design

A hygienic pressure relief valve uses an adjustable spring to hold the plug against the seat. Line pressure acts on the plug from below. When pressure exceeds the setpoint (0.35 to 5 bar), the plug lifts and vents through a side outlet. The valve reseats when pressure drops below setpoint.

Surface Finish and Cleanability
