A sanitary float-type air relief valve automatically releases trapped air from pipelines while maintaining hygienic conditions in food, dairy, beverage, and pharmaceutical processing. The valve uses a stainless steel float that rises with liquid level to seal the exhaust port when the system is full, and descends to open the port when air accumulates. This mechanism prevents air locks, protects pumps from cavitation, and maintains product integrity without external power. A sanitary pressure relief valve with float-type design ensures automatic air release without manual intervention. 316L stainless steel with electropolished finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm) prevents bacterial adhesion and enables CIP/SIP.

What does a sanitary float-type air relief valve do

  1. The valve is installed at system high points where air naturally accumulates.

  2. The float rises with liquid level to seal the exhaust port when the system is full.

  3. When air accumulates, the float descends and opens the port to release trapped air.

  4. The self-draining geometry prevents product retention and ensures CIP compatibility.

Common Application Pitfalls

  •  Non-vertical installation → Float mechanism fails. → Install vertically with cover facing upward.

  •  Standard valves in sanitary service → Rough surfaces harbor bacteria. → Specify 316L with Ra ≤ 0.8 μm.

  •  Wrong seal material → EPDM degrades at high temperature. → Specify FPM for elevated temperature service.

  •  Ignoring CIP compatibility → Product residues accumulate. → Specify self-draining design.

Operating Principle

The valve operates based on float buoyancy. When the system fills with liquid, the float rises and seals the exhaust port. As air accumulates, the liquid level in the valve body drops, the float descends, and the port opens to release trapped air. This cycle repeats continuously without manual intervention. A sanitary air relief valve with self-cleaning action prevents clogging and ensures reliable operation.

Advantages:

  • Automatic operation without external power

  • Self-cleaning action prevents clogging

  • Seals tight under pressure (≥0.1MPa)

  • Dual port design: large port for rapid filling, small port for micro-release

Material Specifications

Feature Specification Benefit
Body material AISI 316L SS Corrosion resistance, hygienic
Surface finish Ra ≤ 0.8 μm electropolished Prevents bacterial adhesion
Float material 316L SS Corrosion resistance
Seal material EPDM or FPM FDA-compliant, temperature-rated
Connections Tri-clamp, weld, threaded Flexible installation

A sanitary air vent valve with 316L construction and FDA-compliant seals meets 3-A Sanitary and ASME BPE standards.

Installation Parameters

Operating parameters:

  • Max pressure: 1.0 MPa (10 bar)

  • Max temperature: 90°C (EPDM) / 150°C (FPM)

  • Float density: < 1.0 kg/dm³

Installation:

  • Mount vertically with cover facing upward

  • Install at system high points

  • Allowable deviation: ≤2°

  • Flanges per ASME B16.5 or EN 1092-1

A sanitary vent valve with self-draining geometry prevents product retention and ensures CIP compatibility. Dual exhaust port designs handle both rapid filling and continuous micro-release.

Seal Material Selection

Seal Material Max Temp CIP/SIP Compatibility Typical Application
EPDM 90°C CIP to 90°C Food, dairy, beverage
FPM/Viton 150°C CIP/SIP to 150°C Pharmaceutical, biotech, elevated temp

Applications

Dairy: Pasteurizers, milk storage. 316L, EPDM, tri-clamp, 3-A Sanitary.

Beverage: Beer fermentation, carbonated lines. 316L, EPDM, vertical installation at tank high points.

Pharmaceutical: WFI, bioreactors, sterile water. 316L, Ra ≤ 0.4 μm, SIP, USP Class VI.

Food processing: Sauce, syrup, cooking vessels. 316L, self-draining, CIP.

A sanitary air vent with 316L and electropolished finish meets ASME BPE and 3-A Sanitary requirements for high-purity applications.

Installation and Application Guide

Sanitary float-type air relief valves provide automatic air release through float-activated opening and closing. 316L stainless steel with electropolished finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm) prevents bacterial adhesion. EPDM seals suit standard service to 90°C; FPM handles elevated temperatures. Self-draining geometry prevents product retention and enables CIP.  Install vertically at system high points for optimal performance. Dual exhaust port designs handle both rapid filling and continuous micro-release during normal operation.
