A sanitary butterfly valve can achieve reliable shutoff through a centered disc, elastomer seat, and controlled sealing compression. The flanged model uses EPDM as the standard seal material, with FPM, silicone, and NBR available as alternatives. It supports pressures up to 10 bar and temperatures up to 120°C.

Why Centerline Soft Sealing Matters

In a centerline butterfly design, the disc rotates around the pipe center. The soft seat surrounds the disc and forms the sealing interface when the valve closes.

For a butterfly valve sanitary system, seat compression, disc alignment, and elastomer condition affect shutoff performance and service life.

How the Seat Supports Sealing

A self-tightening seat can increase sealing contact as line pressure acts on the elastomer. Correct sizing and installation are still required to maintain stable sealing.

The sealing system should consider:

  •  Disc-to-seat contact at the closed position
  •  Seat elasticity and compression
  •  Pressure direction and differential pressure
  •  Temperature effects on elastomer performance
  •  Compatibility with process and cleaning fluids

Stainless Steel Material Selection

A stainless steel sanitary butterfly valve commonly uses SS304 or SS316L for the body and disc. SS316L can be selected where greater resistance to process fluids or cleaning chemicals is required.

The model uses CNC-machined components with polished body and disc surfaces. Available standards include 3A, DIN, SMS, RJT, ISO, and IDF.

Choosing the Right Seal Material

EPDM is the standard seal option, while FPM, silicone, and NBR provide alternatives for different media and operating conditions.

Sanitary butterfly valves should be matched to the actual process. Temperature, chemical exposure, sterilization cycles, and product compatibility should be checked before selection.

Why Surface Finish Affects Hygiene

Polished product-contact surfaces reduce machining marks and surface irregularities that can retain product residues. Cleanability also depends on weld quality, disc-seat geometry, and valve orientation.

Hygienic butterfly valves should therefore be evaluated as part of the complete piping system rather than by body material alone.

Flanged Connection and Installation

A flanged connection creates a rigid joint between the valve and pipeline. Correct alignment reduces mechanical stress and supports consistent gasket sealing.

Installation should verify:

  1. Matching flange dimensions
  2. Correct gasket material
  3. Pipe alignment
  4. Even bolt tightening
  5. Maintenance access

Typical Applications

A sanitary butterfly valve can be used for isolation and flow control in food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic systems.

Typical installation points include:

  • Process transfer lines
  • Tank inlet and outlet piping
  • Beverage systems
  • Dairy processing equipment
  • CIP circuits

For repeated CIP cycles or elevated temperatures, the selected seat material should match the actual cleaning conditions.

Selection Checklist

Before specifying the valve, the system should confirm:

  1. Pipe size and flange standard
  2. Operating pressure and temperature
  3. SS304 or SS316L requirement
  4. Seal compatibility
  5. CIP and sterilization conditions
  6. Manual or automated operation

A sanitary butterfly valve depends on disc geometry, seat behavior, surface finish, and installation accuracy. The centerline disc and soft-seat structure can provide repeatable shutoff when the valve is matched to its operating conditions.
