A hygienic encapsulated 3 way tri clamp ball valve removes dead space by wrapping the ball and seat inside a single housing. The filled cavity leaves no pocket where product can collect, so the wetted path stays flush through every port. This design prevents residue buildup and cross contamination in dairy, beverage, and pharmaceutical lines. The body uses SS304 or SS316L with a clamped connection, 1/2" to 4" size, 0-10 bar, -20°C to 120°C, and a PTFE gasket.
Encapsulated Body and Dead Space Removal
A standard ball valve leaves a gap between the ball surface and the body wall. Product enters that gap and stays there between cycles. Clean-in-place fluid cannot reach the pocket.
An encapsulated body fills that gap with seat material. The ball rotates against the seat liner, and the wetted path stays flush. No cavity remains for residue to collect.
-
Full seat liner wraps the ball face
-
No open cavity between ball and body
-
Wetted path stays flush through the bore
-
CIP fluid reaches the full seal area
Why Dead Space Leads to Cross Contamination
Any retained volume carries product into the next batch. A filled cavity removes that volume before it can hold residue.
Three-Way Flow Path and Port Layout
The three-way body carries three clamped ports. A T-port bore links one inlet to two outlets at once. An L-port bore links two adjacent ports and blocks the third.
Combining both patterns lets one body divert, merge, or shut off flow. A 3 way tri clamp valve built this way replaces two separate valves on a shared manifold.

Full Bore and Flow Capacity
A full bore sanitary ball valve keeps the internal passage at pipe diameter. The bore matches the tube ID, so flow does not step down at the valve. That reduces pressure drop and shear on the product.
A full bore also helps drainage. With no step at the valve, liquid leaves the line without pooling at the seat edge.
Seat Materials and Cleanability
Seat compounds include PTFE for broad chemical resistance. The liner covers the ball face and the body cavity, so wetted parts stay isolated from the metal housing.
Wetted surfaces reach Ra ≤ 0.8 μm. Electropolishing lowers roughness toward Ra ≤ 0.4 μm and reduces attachment sites for microbes. A sanitary valve with a polished liner releases soil during cleaning.
Installation and Maintenance Steps
-
Confirm the clamp size matches the line ferrule.
-
Check the seat liner sits flat in the body cavity.
-
Fit the valve between the ferrules and tighten the clamps.
-
Cycle the handle through all positions before pressurizing.
-
Inspect the seat and ball at scheduled intervals.
A worn seat leaks across a closed port. Replace the seat liner when cuts, swelling, or hardening appear. Check the ball surface for scratches that would tear a new seat.
Common Applications
Encapsulated ball valves serve lines that need clean flow paths and multi-port routing. The filled cavity suits batch changeover duty.
-
Dairy and beverage transfer lines
-
Pharmaceutical batch separation
-
Brewery tank switching
-
Food processing drain lines
-
CIP and SIP circuit joints
A 3 way tri clamp valve suits manifolds that route several fluids through shared piping. The encapsulated seat keeps each path isolated.
Seat Wear and Changeover Practice
Seat wear shows up as leakage across a closed port or as handle drag. Check the liner at each maintenance window. During product changeover, cycle the valve through all positions and flush each path. Record the seat replacement date so wear rates can be tracked against process cycles. Keep a spare seat and ball on site to shorten unplanned downtime.
