For hygienic pressure vessels with welded oval openings, an inward-opening stainless steel manway achieves self-sealing through internal pressure. The cover mounts on the vessel's inner wall, facing outward; internal pressure acts on the inner surface, pressing it firmly against the gasket. Higher pressure creates a tighter seal. Select SS316L with Ra ≤ 0.8μm finish for pharmaceutical and biotech applications; SS304 suits food and beverage service. The oval shape optimizes access while minimizing stress concentrations on the vessel. Install the frame with full penetration welds, seat the gasket correctly, and torque fasteners for initial preload.

The Self-Sealing Principle

The inward-opening stainless manway is installed from inside the vessel, with the sealing surface facing outward. Internal pressure acts on the inner face, pressing it outward against the vessel's sealing surface. This pressure-driven force increases proportionally with vessel pressure, providing automatic compensation for pressure fluctuations. This eliminates the need for high clamping forces required by outward-opening covers. The stainless steel manway relies on this passive mechanism to maintain integrity during pressure variations.

Self-sealing operation stages:

  • 🏗️ Normal: Cover seated against gasket with minimal preload

  • 📈 Pressure rise: Internal force increases cover-to-gasket compression

  • 🔒 Sealing: Higher pressure creates tighter seal

  • 📉 Pressure drop: Sealing force reduces proportionally

Oval Geometry and Stress Distribution

The oval shape provides a larger opening area than circular covers of equivalent width, facilitating access while reducing stress concentration at corners. The elliptical contour matches the natural stress distribution in vessel openings, minimizing required reinforcement.

Geometric parameters:

  • Common oval sizes: 430×330mm, 530×430mm, 635×525mm

  • Frame height: 75-100mm for hygienic service

  • Cover thickness: 2.5-4mm depending on pressure rating

Material Selection

Parameter SS304 SS316L
Corrosion resistance Standard Enhanced (molybdenum)
Suitability Food, beverage, water Pharmaceuticals, biotech, aggressive media
Surface finish capability Ra ≤ 0.8μm Ra ≤ 0.8μm (electropolish to 0.5μm)

The stainless steel manway lids require wetted surfaces to be crevice-free. SS316L provides molybdenum-enhanced corrosion resistance for CIP chemicals. SS304 offers adequate performance for standard food and beverage applications.

Surface Finish and Hygienic Compliance

Internal surface finish determines cleanability and bacterial resistance. Standard hygienic applications require Ra ≤ 0.8μm for the stainless steel manway. Electropolishing to Ra ≤ 0.5μm or finer is available for pharmaceutical and biotech applications.

Surface finish standards:

  • Mechanical polish: Ra ≤ 0.8μm (standard)

  • Electropolish: Ra ≤ 0.5μm (pharmaceutical)

  • Mirror finish: Ra ≤ 0.2μm (biotech)

Welded Connection and Installation

The frame is welded to the vessel opening with the cover positioned inside. Full penetration welds with proper surface finishing are required for hygienic service. The welded connection eliminates gaskets and crevices at the joint.

Installation requirements:

  •  Frame welded with proper penetration for hygienic finish

  •  Gasket seated correctly in the cover groove

  •  Fasteners torqued to specification for initial seal

  •  Cover swings inward for vessel interior access

Gasket Design and Sealing Force

The beveled-edge design creates a wedge action when the cover is pressed outward. The gasket is compressed between the cover and the vessel's sealing surface. EPDM suits general sanitary service with steam sterilization up to 130°C.

Gasket material options:

  • EPDM: General service, CIP/SIP up to 130°C

  • Silicone: Pharmaceutical, biotech, up to 150°C

  • FKM (Viton): Oils, high-temperature up to 200°C

  • NBR: Oils, petroleum-based fluids up to 100°C

Maintenance and Inspection

Regular inspection of the gasket ensures continued sealing performance. The beveled sealing surface should be checked for wear or damage. Gasket replacement intervals depend on service conditions.

Maintenance checks:

  1. Inspect gasket for cracking or hardening quarterly

  2. Verify beveled sealing surfaces for scratches or pitting

  3. Check fastener torque and condition

  4. Test seal integrity with pressure hold test

The oval inward-opening manway design provides reliable self-sealing pressure retention with minimal maintenance, making it a preferred choice for hygienic pressure vessels in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical processing. The stainless manway construction ensures durability and cleanability, while the stainless steel manway design facilitates safe vessel access. Proper material selection—SS304 or SS316L—and surface finish determine the service life and hygiene compliance of the stainless steel manway lids in their intended application.
