A mixproof valve prevents cross-contamination by separating two process media with independent seats and an intermediate leakage chamber. When both seats are closed, the chamber provides a separation zone between product lines. Pneumatic actuation, double sealing, leakage detection, and controlled seat movement determine the valve's isolation performance.
How Double-Seat Isolation Works
A valve mixproof design uses two sealing elements arranged along the same process axis. When the valve is closed, the two seats form an intermediate chamber that separates the upper and lower product paths.
This structure differs from a conventional single-seat divert valve because seal failure can direct leakage into the intermediate chamber instead of immediately connecting the two media.
The Isolation Sequence
- Valve closed: Two seats isolate the upper and lower product paths.
- Intermediate chamber: The space between the seals provides a separation zone.
- Leakage detection: Escaping product can be directed toward a visible drain.
- CIP cycle: Controlled seat movement can expose sealing areas during cleaning.
The referenced mixproof valves design uses SS304 or SS316L, with EPDM/FDA177.2600 seals, a maximum working pressure of 10 bar, and temperature up to 120°C.
Why Leakage Visualization Matters
A double-seat structure does not rely only on seal integrity. The intermediate chamber creates a controlled route for leakage, making a failed seal easier to identify before the two process media become directly connected.
For a mixed proof valve application, visible leakage can indicate seat wear, seal damage, incorrect assembly, or abnormal operating conditions. The drain route should remain accessible and unobstructed.
🔍 Visible leakage: Fluid at the outlet can indicate a damaged seat seal.
🧼 Separate chamber: The intermediate zone limits direct product-to-product contact.
🔄 Seat movement: Controlled poppet movement can expose sealing areas during cleaning.
🚨 Early detection: Visible leakage provides a physical signal when separation is compromised.
Pneumatic Actuation and Seat Movement
A pneumatic mixproof valve uses compressed air to control its internal poppets. The actuator must provide sufficient force for stable sealing while allowing controlled movement during opening, closing, and cleaning.
The referenced configuration supports pneumatic, C-Top, and process-controller operation. Listed connection options include threaded, welded, and clamp arrangements, with sizes from 2" to 4" or DN50-DN100.
Design Checks for Automation
- Confirm actuator pressure and required stroke.
- Match sensor signals with the process controller.
- Verify open and closed positions.
- Check the sequence used for product transfer and CIP.
- Keep the leakage outlet visible and accessible.
Materials and Hygienic Construction
Sanitary valves used for product separation require materials that tolerate the process medium, cleaning chemicals, temperature, and pressure. SS316L can suit higher corrosion exposure, while SS304 may fit less demanding service.
The referenced design lists PTFE, EPDM, and NBR as gasket options and includes DIN, SMS, RJT, and 3A standards. Applications include beer, beverages, food, pharmaceutical products, syrup, yogurt, and porridge.

Cleaning and Maintenance
Cleaning performance depends on access to the sealing surfaces and intermediate chamber. During CIP, controlled poppet movement can expose areas that remain closed during normal operation.
A mixproof valve should be inspected for several conditions:
- Seal wear or deformation
- Actuator response
- Leakage outlet condition
- Residue accumulation
- Abnormal movement during operation
Replacement intervals should reflect cycle frequency, cleaning chemistry, temperature, and the properties of the processed medium.
Selecting a Double-Seat Configuration
The correct mixproof valve depends on the number of fluids, required separation logic, cleaning sequence, pressure, temperature, and control system. The leakage chamber should also be considered as part of the monitoring strategy.
A properly configured double-seat valve combines physical separation with visible leakage management. This makes it suitable for process lines where different fluids must pass through shared equipment without creating an uncontrolled cross-connection.
Sanitary Pneumatic Double Seat Clamped Mixproof Valve
- When the valve is opened, the fluid can pass from one body to the other.
- Once the valve is closed, the double seat creates an annular chamber that isolates the dodies sealing them with double seals. It allows a CIP operation providing an interface between the two fluids, preventing the possibility of product contamination.
- Due to the leakage detector any leak of a seat seal is detected by the apprearance of liquid at the bottom of the valve. The zone between the poppets and the seats is cleaned by pulsing the individual poppets when the specific line is being cleaned, the poppets are fractionally stroked by two additional limited movement pistons located within the main actuator.
- Applied for production of beer, beverage, food, pharmacy, etc, such as, syrup, yogurt, portridge.
