A stainless steel manway provides access to tanks and vessels for cleaning, inspection, and maintenance. The design logic follows three engineering layers: industry-specific design rules (3-A Sanitary for food, ASME BPE for pharma), material selection (304 for general service, 316L for corrosive/pharma), and pressure containment (ASME VIII for pressure vessels, atmospheric for storage). These three layers determine the manway's surface finish, gasket material, and closure mechanism, ensuring it meets the cleanability, corrosion resistance, and safety requirements of its intended service.

How does a stainless steel manway work

  1. The manway cover seals against the vessel opening through a gasket compressed by the clamp or bolted closure.

  2. Internal surfaces are polished (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm or Ra ≤ 0.4 μm) to prevent bacterial adhesion and enable CIP cleaning.

  3. The closure mechanism maintains sealing integrity under operating pressure—atmospheric or up to ASME VIII rated.

  4. Spring assists and safety grids protect personnel during entry and exit.

Common Design Pitfalls

  •  Non-code manways on pressure vessels: Violates ASME VIII. → Verify ASME VIII or PED certification.

  •  Rough surfaces: Above Ra 0.8 μm increases bacterial adhesion by 300%. → Specify Ra ≤ 0.8 μm for food contact.

  •  Non-sanitary gaskets: Contamination risk. → Specify FDA-compliant EPDM or silicone.

  •  Incorrect size: Under 18" restricts entry. → Specify minimum 18" diameter or 15"×20" oval.

Sanitary vs Standard Industrial Manway

Standard: Rough surfaces (Ra > 0.8 μm), non-FDA gaskets, threaded connections, limited CIP, lower cost.

Sanitary: Polished surfaces (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm), FDA-compliant gaskets, clamp connections, full CIP/SIP, eliminates contamination risk.

Stainless manway selection requires matching the design rule to the application—3-A for food, BPE for pharma.

Design Rule Hierarchy

Primary (industry): Food/Dairy → 3-A Sanitary. Pharma/Biotech → ASME BPE.

Secondary (pressure): Pressure vessels → add ASME VIII or PED. Storage tanks → no code.

When both apply: Specify manways carrying both certifications (e.g., ASME BPE + ASME VIII).

Material Selection – 304 vs 316L

Material Corrosion Resistance Finish Capability Cost Cleaning Applications
304 Good Ra ≤ 0.8 μm Low Daily CIP Food, dairy, beverage
316L Excellent Ra ≤ 0.4 μm High Daily CIP + Weekly SIP Pharma, biotech, chemicals

Surface Finish Requirements

  • Ra ≤ 0.8 μm (32 Ra): Minimum for food contact (3-A Sanitary)

  • Ra ≤ 0.4 μm (16 Ra): Electropolished for pharmaceutical (ASME BPE)

  • Smooth surfaces prevent bacterial adhesion; electropolishing forms a protective oxide film.

Sizes and Access

Round: 8" to 24" (200mm to 600mm). 14"-18" for standard personnel entry. 20"-24" for frequent entry.

Oval: Typically 15"×20" (400mm×500mm) for personnel access.

Minimum personnel entry: 18" diameter or 15"×20" oval.

Pressure Rating

  • Atmospheric: Storage tanks, no stamp, clamp closure.

  • ASME VIII: Pressure vessels, U/UM stamp, bolted closure.

  • PED: EU market, CE marking.

  • Tanks above 15 PSIG typically require ASME VIII.

Gaskets and Sealing

  • EPDM: Food/dairy, FDA, CIP to 135°C

  • Silicone: Pharmaceutical, USP Class VI, SIP to 150°C

  • PTFE: Chemicals, broad resistance, up to 260°C

  • Replacement: 1-3 years

Single-Use vs Reusable

Reusable: 316L, CIP/SIP, requires cleaning validation.

Single-use: Pre-sterilized, no cleaning validation, gamma-irradiated.

Stainless steel manways for tanks use 304 or 316L materials with appropriate surface finish based on the application.

Installation and Maintenance Guidance

Manway installation requires flange alignment within 1/16" to prevent gasket distortion. Gaskets should be replaced annually for CIP service or when visible wear appears. Spring assists require lubrication every 6 months. Safety grids must be inspected weekly for hinge integrity. For vessels operating above 100°C, re-torque bolted closures after the first thermal cycle. Single-use manway covers are gamma-irradiated and validated for 5-year shelf life. Stainless steel manway doors are available with spring assists and safety grids for personnel protection.
