A sanitary angle filter removes particles, microorganisms, and impurities from fluid streams through mechanical separation. Fluid enters the housing, passes through a perforated screen or filter element that traps contaminants above a specific micron rating, and exits as purified fluid. The angle body design creates a tangential flow path that directs particles toward the filter element while maintaining low pressure drop. This filtration process protects downstream equipment and ensures product purity in pharmaceutical, food, and biotech processing.

How does a sanitary angle filter purify fluid

  1. Fluid enters through the inlet port under system pressure.

  2. The fluid passes through the filter element that traps particles above the rated micron size.

  3. Clean fluid exits through the outlet port while contaminants remain captured in the housing.

  4. The angle body design minimizes flow resistance, with pressure drop typically less than 0.5 bar for clean elements.

Common Application Pitfalls

  • 🔄 Strainer for sub-micron filtration → Ineffective. → Specify cartridge filter for fine particle removal.

  • 📊 Oversized housing → Dead zones create contamination risks. → Match housing size to flow rate.

  • ⚙️ Ignoring pressure drop → Clogged elements reduce flow. → Monitor ΔP; replace at 0.5 bar.

  • 🔧 Wrong seal material → EPDM degrades at high temperature. → Specify FPM for elevated service.

How Angle-Type Filtration Works

The angle body positions the filter element at an angle relative to the flow path, creating a natural settling zone for heavier particles. Fluid enters the housing and strikes the filter element, where particles are captured on the surface or within the media. The angled configuration reduces flow turbulence, allowing larger particles to settle before reaching the element and extending service life.

Filtration mechanisms:

  • Direct interception: Particles larger than pore size are physically blocked.

  • Inertial impaction: Particles deviate from flow path and impact the filter medium.

  • Depth filtration: Particles are trapped within the filter media structure.

Strainer vs Filter – Selecting the Right Type

Type Particle Removal Element Cost Application
Strainer >50 microns Reusable mesh Lower Protect pumps, remove visible debris
Filter Sub-micron Disposable cartridge Higher Final product clarity, sterility

A sanitary strainer removes larger particles down to 50 microns. A sanitary filter captures finer particles down to sub-micron levels. Selection depends on particle size and product clarity requirements.

Material Specifications

Feature Specification Benefit
Body material AISI 316L SS Corrosion resistance
Internal finish Ra ≤ 0.8 μm standard Prevents bacterial adhesion
Electropolished finish Ra ≤ 0.4 μm optional Pharmaceutical-grade cleanability
Seals EPDM, silicone, FPM FDA-compliant, temperature-rated
Connections Tri-clamp, weld, threaded Flexible installation

A sanitary filter housing stainless construction with 316L body meets 3-A Sanitary and ASME BPE requirements. Sanitary filters stainless steel with Ra ≤ 0.8 μm finish enable CIP cleaning.

Surface Finish and Cleanability

Finish specifications:

  • Ra ≤ 0.8 μm (32 μin): Minimum for 3-A Sanitary compliance

  • Ra ≤ 0.4 μm (16 μin): Electropolished for pharmaceutical

  • Electropolishing forms a dense oxide film that inhibits microbial adhesion

Applications

Pharmaceutical: Sterile water, API, bioreactor gas. 316L, Ra ≤ 0.4 μm, cartridge filter, SIP.

Biotech: Cell culture media, fermentation. 316L, electropolished, depth filter, USP Class VI.

Food and beverage: Dairy, beer, wine, juice. 316L, Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, strainer/cartridge, 3-A Sanitary.

Cosmetics: Lotion, cream, toothpaste. 316L, Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, strainer/cartridge.

Installation and Application Guide

Install angle-type filters with the housing oriented for optimal drainage and particle settling. Monitor differential pressure across the element—replace or clean when ΔP increases by 50% above baseline. For CIP/SIP applications, verify seal temperature rating.

A sanitary filter housing stainless construction with electropolished finish ensures corrosion resistance. Sanitary filters stainless steel with 316L and Ra ≤ 0.8 μm finish are specified for food and dairy. Sanitary strainer elements with 20-100 mesh screens protect downstream pumps and valves. Sanitary filtration systems with angle-type housings are available in sizes from 1" to 4" (DN25 to DN100).
